The AmeriCorps member will work with school districts in the Greater Green Bay Area to expand the purchase of local seasonal foods in school meal programs and provide Farm to School-based nutrition education to students.
The AmeriCorps member will work in four key areas to support the development of a countywide Farm to School Program:
- Local Food Procurement: support school food service directors in purchasing and menuing local food, including support of an online Farm to School Ordering System, the development of a local food cooperative, and organizing food service worker trainings.
- Nutrition Education: plan and implement classroom lessons around a Harvest of the Month framework in 15 area elementary schools, incorporating local farmers where possible and engaging volunteers as needed.
- School Gardens: map out existing school gardens and identify any gaps or resource needs, support educators in planting, maintaining and utilizing gardens as a teaching tool, and coordinate volunteers to ensure the success of school gardens.
- Program Sustainability: engage in media advocacy, co-facilitate a Farm to School taskforce, and engage community members and organizations in Farm to School programming.
The AmeriCorps member will work with elementary and middle school students, teachers, farmers, food service personnel, parents, and a wide range of community partners.
